Member Involvement Ideas
Here are some ideas that may keep new members coming back and older members feeling they are still an important cog in the wheel of Lionism:
- After the induction ceremony, assign the new member to an active
committee or give him tasks in accordance with his talents and temperament,
preferably one of his own choice. It should be a task through which he can make
a meaningful contribution to Lionism. He should be teamed with his sponsor or a
veteran member, but should not be overwhelmed with duties.
- Create a Rookie
Committee consisting of all new members. They are asked to develop new projects
for their group as well as participate in other Club activities.
- Involve all
members (new and old) with responsible and accountable tasks. The Vice-President(s) should be constantly involved in overseeing committee activities
to ensure adequate performance with necessary changes to accomplish their goals.
- Assign senior members tasks commensurate with their years and capabilities.
Care should be exercised not to demand more of them than they can give.
- Rotate members every year for different projects with specific job
responsibilities. This encourages members to become more active because of
their involvement.
- Involve the Lions families through guest nights. This
gives the membership an extra boost and encourages members to remain active. In
fact, there should be activities for members and their families that are not
Club projects but a time to relax, such as a picnic, Holiday party, Valentine's
Day dinner, etc. Furthermore, plan projects where the Lions family members work
side by side with the Club members.
- New Members Acting as Greeters: New
Lions stand at the entry for the next six weeks to greet the members, thereby
getting to know them better.
- During world Lions Service Day, have all your Lions working, even if you have to break them up into small groups.
- Have a group of your older Lions start a file or scrapbook on the history of your club and have them keep it up.
- Once a year, have a committee erect a display on Lionism in one of the prominent stores in town.
- Assign some members to place regular articles about your club activities in the local newspapers.
- Establish an Initiation Committee--very important.
- Select a Lion or Lions to write an effective club bulletin.
- Establish an Awards Committee to be responsible for ordering and presenting awards to deserving Lions. This is very
important.
- Have combined meetings with other clubs.
- Make sure your standing committees have a reason to be active.
- Have a group of your Lions participate in area parades.
- Sponsor a night to honor older members.
- Give new members a responsible job immediately and have them work with a few older members of the club.
- Ask members to provide a program on their individual occupations.
- Create a committee on long-range projects, such as working with hospitals, care centers, etc.
- Create an active Past Presidents Committee.
- See that new and older members enter into the social part of Lionism, also.
- Keep members spouses informed and get them involved in club activities.
