Sponsor's Responsibilities
Sponsoring a new member means helping the
Club maintain its vitality with new outlooks and a new enthusiasm. However,
sponsoring a new member also demands additional responsibilities.
- Be
certain that the new member's induction ceremony is impressive so he may take
justifiable pride in joining the Club.
- Ensure that he receives a New Member Kit.
- Make him feel welcome once he dons the Lions lapel pin.
- Introduce him to all
Club members and make certain he knows the post each officer holds.
- Remind
officers to provide him with assignments that enable him to immediately become
an active Lion.
- Arrange for Orientation Sessions on Lionism at Club, District
and International levels.
- Coach him on the Clubs Constitution and By-Laws.
- Answer any questions he might have on the operation of the Club, as well as on
any other subject of Lionism.
- Call him prior to the first few meetings and offer
to accompany him. In fact, the sponsor is responsible for his attendance for
the first year.
- Encourage him to feel free to let you know of any problem he
may have so a solution for them is found.
- Assist him in developing his Lionistic
potential.
NEW members are the lifeblood of a club. By involving them in your club, you bring in new talent, new ideas and new enthusiasm.
- Share your enthusiasm and knowledge about the Lions organization. Tell them what Lions are doing at the local and national level.
- Show them...THE LION magazine articles, Newspaper coverage of Lions activities,
Projects built/created by Lions or Lions-raised funds.
- Inquire what activities interest them and highlight Lions efforts in those areas or explain that your club might be interested in pursuing new activities in that area.
- Offer to answer any questions about your club or club activities or policies.
Introduce them to the many benefits of membership including meeting new people, networking, building new skills and, of course, the sense of satisfaction that comes from helping others.
Sponsoring a new member is more than just a one step process. Sponsorship requires Lions to play several
roles. The responsibilities do not end when a prospect is inducted as a member. Helping them grow in the organization means they will stay a
member. As a mentor you should:
- Continue to introduce them to Lions they have not met, helping them feel like part of the group.
They joined because of you--so don't let them down.
- Offer to accompany them to meetings.
- Stay in touch.
- Make sure that they are allowed to express their thoughts and ideas.
- Serve as a source of inspiration and advice.
- Encourage them to be active and to live up to the Lions motto:
We Serve
